Each year, Willmott Dixon delivers £100 million-worth of projects in care homes, extra care developments, and retirement villages - a third of our housing construction work

We build care homes, extra care developments – where people can live independently while still having 24-hour access to help and support if needed – and retirement villages for public and private sector clients. Projects range from accommodation where help is always close at hand, to large, self-contained retirement communities.

Our experienced team understands the unique requirements of the sector, and the challenge of caring for our ageing population.

Understanding care sector requirements

We understand that the quality of construction must be very high for people in care, due to the dependence they have on their environments.

This means handing over a snag-free product on completion; a carpet edge which could cause a trip or a heating system which leaves vulnerable people cold for months can have major consequences.

Experience of complex M&E systems is crucial, because of the specialist equipment many care homes require. Our construction teams also recognise the importance of having an empathy and compassion for the end user.

Innovation

We are currently developing a standardised extra care model which will provide a quicker, more cost-effective approach to construction. Willmott Dixon has used this approach successfully in the health sector.

Each model uses a standardised design, and follows best design practice and the latest regulations, including: Lifetime Homes standards; DDA (Disability Discrimination Act); and HAPPI (Housing our Ageing Population: Panel for Innovation). These standardised extra care designs provide greater certainty of planning, cost, and a faster construction programme.

We are very satisfied with the performance of Willmott Dixon and would have no hesitation recommending them. Mark Curran Development Director, ExtraCare Charitable Trust
