The safety, health and welfare of our employees, those who work with us, and anyone affected by our works, is always a top priority. We protect the environments we work in and aim to leave them in a better state than when we found them.

With our accredited and award-winning systems and procedures, we go beyond legal compliance to deliver best-in-class safety, health and environmental (SHE) practice. Our core belief is that no one should suffer from ill health, (physical or mental) or an accident at work.

In 2022, we had three major incidents compared to six in 2021. However, our accident frequency rate increased slightly by 0.03 reflecting an increase in over 7-day RIDDOR injury incidents. Our incident response procedures were followed with full communication to all stakeholders and no further action was taken. We had no prosecutions during the year. Overall, 93% of our projects reported zero accidents in 2022.

Risk management and compliance

We maintained an integrated risk management system for health, safety and environmental disciplines (Environmental Management System ISO14001:2015, Occupation Health and Safety management system ISO45001:2018).

Our Environmental Incident Frequency Rate increased slightly to 0.1 in 2022 from 0.05 in 2021. This measure reports the number of incidents which had the potential to cause harm to the environment, per 100,000 hours worked.

Improving data security

We are holders of the Cyber Essentials accreditation and the ISO27001 certification, demonstrating our commitment to data security. We have replaced or upgraded all our laptops and introduced multi-factor authentication. Over half of emails were filtered out before they reached our inboxes having been identified as harmful or fraudulent.

A safe and sustainable driving culture

Our people should have the knowledge and skills to stay safe on the road, and the vehicles they drive or operate should be legally compliant. Our Group Fleet Compliance Manager works closely with our people and TTC Group to oversee the compliance of our people as drivers and our fleet. All our people undergo licence, health and roadworthiness checks before being allowed to drive for business. We also carry out an online risk assessment, evaluating each driver’s attitude, experience, knowledge, and history. In 2022, a series of e-learning modules was created to provide information on key road safety topics such as fatigue, breaking and breakdown procedures.

Our people's wellbeing

We recognise our responsibility to support the wellbeing, both physical and mental, of our own people and the hundreds of supply chain partners that work on our sites every day across the country.

Since 2018, we have run the All Safe Minds campaign to change perceptions around mental health. We have a network of more than 300 mental health first aiders across our company and we deliver mental health awareness toolbox talks on our sites.

Everyone can access the WeCare Employee Assistance Programme, our 24/7 Mental Health Support Service.

To support our people through the cost-of-living crisis, we launched a dedicated financial wellbeing page on our intranet, offering advice and support on a range of topics from childcare cost to energy bills.
