Good connectivity powers local growth

A UK leader for interchanges

For towns and cities to attract investment and create opportunity, they need infrastructure that links different modes of transport quickly and seamlessly.

That's why we're seeing major national investment in transport hubs, and why our regeneration and transport specialists are among the most active and trusted teams in the sector. Our track record runs the full range of what a modern interchange can be, and through our framework partners, including SCAPE, Pagabo and Procurement Hub, we can be appointed quickly and easily for projects of any value.

A new generation of interchange

The award-winning Stockport Interchange shows what these schemes can now achieve. A £115m mixed-use development and the centrepiece of Stockport's £1bn town centre regeneration, it combines a state-of-the-art bus interchange with 196 new apartments, active travel links and Viaduct Park, a two-acre town centre park, the first of its kind in the UK, built above the interchange itself.

Delivered on time and on budget for Transport for Greater Manchester, Stockport Council and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority with development partner CityRise, the scheme was named Project of the Year (over £50m) at the 2025 Construction News Awards. The judges singled out how the team addressed complex multi-level access within a constrained, live urban setting, working around Victorian sewers and rock-cut tunnels, using a hydraulic steel protective screen to accelerate the build, cutting concrete use by 11% through low-carbon solutions, and completing the whole thing with a zero accident frequency rate.

Every kind of interchange

Our experience spans the full spectrum:

  • Mixed-use destinations that combine transport with homes, public realm and green space, as at Stockport.
  • Net zero hubs that bring multiple modes together, at North Shields, a single hub connects bus, the Tyne and Wear Metro, the Shields Ferry and local cycling routes.
  • Bus station transformations that modernise dated facilities while respecting their surroundings, at Halifax, we refurbished the existing station and added a bright new concourse while restoring three listed buildings; at Dewsbury, a £23m revamp is adding a living roof, solar panels and a Changing Places facility; and we've recently been appointed to refurbish Huddersfield Bus Station, a near-£15m Transforming Cities Fund scheme for West Yorkshire Combined Authority.
  • Rail station gateways - at Darlington, we're delivering a 600-space multi-storey car park and station entrance as part of Network Rail's £140m masterplan.

Leading on net zero

Transport hubs are a natural place to push sustainability, and North Shields Transport Hub is one of our proudest examples. Completed in 2023 for North Tyneside Council, it was the first building of its kind in the UK to achieve net zero carbon in both construction and operation. Detailed carbon modelling at every design stage, including a glulam timber roof in place of steel and low-carbon concrete foundations, cut embodied carbon by 48% (more than 500 tonnes of CO₂e). A fabric-first, solar-powered design means the building is rated EPC A+ and generates more energy than it consumes, while new landscaping delivered a 100% uplift in biodiversity. The project went on to win Large Project, Net Zero and Most Collaborative Project awards from the Institution of Structural Engineers (Northern Counties).

More than transport

Interchanges are often the catalyst for wider town centre renewal, and the social value runs deep. Across these projects we create local jobs, apprenticeships and training, and invest heavily in local supply chains, from over 850 apprenticeship and training weeks at Stockport to a £7m local spend commitment at Dewsbury. Our Building Lives Academies, run in partnership with local colleges, give people facing barriers to work the skills and qualifications to build careers in construction. These are schemes that don't just move people through a town, they give a place its identity and momentum back.
